The University, located in Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, is an international, multidisciplinary institution whose areas of expertise include Arctic affairs and tourism research. Teaching and research at the University concern on northern and Arctic issues, tourism, art and design, law, education and the social sciences.

The Faculty of Law was established in 1979. It educates every fourth lawyer in Finland, and has total of ca 850 degree students. The Faculty offers a number of courses and lectures in English. There are annually 40-50 incoming exchange students and about the same number of outgoing students.

The University of Lapland has committed in its 2020 Strategy to promote sustainable development especially in the Arctic and the North in general. Environmental law lies at the heart of this commitment and is being intensely promoted by the University. Environmental law is taught and researched in the Faculty of Law and in the Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law (NIEM/Arctic Centre). The Faculty's environmental law teaching covers international, European and national legal systems and the research work is focused on areas including space law, biodiversity law, European environmental law and regulation of natural resources. The Faculty has two professors, specializing in environmental law and international law, working in the environmental law field, together with four researchers. The NIEM – with its research professor and 11 researchers – focuses on the law relating to (Arctic) indigenous peoples and environmental law as it applies in the Arctic and northern regions.
